In many modern applications, particularly in the field of logistics, commerce and security, contactless automatic identification systems have become fundamental parts. Labels which are wirelessly detected by a reader allow unique identification of their carrier which may be, for example, people, animals, goods and products in transport. Due to its high flexibility, radio frequency identification (RFID) has become a key technology.
This book focuses on the development of a two-dimensional position measurement system for passive RFID transponders in the ultrahigh frequency range from 865 MHz to 868 MHz, and the main application is the localization of stationary objects tagged with RFID labels. To this end, a multiple channel system demonstrator is developed and several methods for localizing the passive UHF RFID transponders are presented and analyzed for their accuracy and robustness. Furthermore, strategies to avoid outliers of the position estimates are introduced.
